Graduation Requirements
In order to receive your high school diploma in the state of New Jersey, you must complete a 120 credit program of study that includes mandatory core subjects like English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Language. You must also complete three required elective courses. Each Full Year course is worth 5 credits, and each 1-semester course is worth 2.5 credits. The following are the set number of credits per subject area needed to graduate:
Language Arts Literacy (English): 20 credits
Mathematics: 15 credits
Social Studies: 15 credits
5 credits of World History
10 credits of US History
Science: 15 credits (must include Biology)
World Language: 5 credits
Physical Education/Health: 5 credits per year
Personal Financial Literacy: 2.5 credits
Visual & Performing Arts: 5 credits
Career/Technical/Life Skills: 5 credits
In addition to these course requirements, every student must pass a state-approved assessment in Language Arts Literacy and Mathematics before graduation.
